Communicate, an influential magazine for the corporate communications sector, features Roz Morris, Managing Director of TV News London in its latest edition. Roz is pictured and quoted in a feature on media training.

According to Roz Morris, managing director of training agency TV News London, even the most positive stories need to be finessed by media training.

Merely surviving an interview and getting a few facts in is not good enough no story tells itself without hard work, she says. Good news can sound like bad news or smug news if the spokesperson has not tested their recipe and adjusted the ingredients to achieve the best result. Coming across as positive, professional and normal in an interview is not as easy as it looks.

Some people will work for days on a presentation to a conference with an audience of 500 people, but still believe that five minutes preparation is enough when talking to a radio, TV or web audience of a million or even a hundred million.

Without media training, she says, executives can be side-tracked into talking about issues which are not to their advantage and sounding less professional than they are.

How will the media - whether books, films, music, radio or television - be funded in future?

As Google and other digital businesses are already steadily eating away at traditional media income streams like advertising and royalties, future sources of income were one of the main themes discussed at the 2009 Somerville Media Day which was chaired by TV News Londons Managing Director, Roz Morris (pictured far left above).

Speakers pictured above included (from left to right) - BBC broadcaster and TV News London media and presentation trainer, Kati Whitaker (standing next to Roz), media and entertainment law expert, Rebecca Swindells from Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP, Novelist, Maggie Gee, Former Chief Creative Officer of Endemol, Peter Bazalgette, and broadcaster, Rebecca Wilcox.

Following in the tradition of Somerville media days, all the speakers are Somerville graduates except Peter Bazalgette whose wife Hilary is a Somervillian.

The confrerence was held in the Margaret Thatcher Centre at Somerville College, Oxford.

Sparkle & Wow on Wedding TV

Roz Morris and a Camera Technician ran a one to one TV Media Training session for Sonia Abrams, MD of Sparkle and WOW at her offices in Cockfosters in North London, in preparation for her appearance on Wedding Breakfast on Wedding TV.

Here's what Sonia told us after her course:

I had always imagined what it would be like to be on TV but when the appointment was confirmed for me to appear on Wedding TV I was full of panic. Luckily a few weeks prior I had met Roz from TV News London at a networking meeting in London, so it was a no brainer give her a call.

Roz came to my office and had already prepared some questions that the presenter was likely to ask me. We did a run through and watched it back and did a number of run throughs. The advice and knowledge shared by Roz was amazing. From how to sit, style of clothing to wear and colour choice were all covered.

The interviewer actually asked most of the questions Roz had practised with me during training. Roz even contacted me after to give feedback. The feedback and training was invaluable and even gave me the confidence to do an unplanned TV interview which was part of a one hour feature for our wedding event staged at Alexandra Palace.

European Professional Womens Network AGM

Roz Morris, Managing Director of TV News London, (front row centre above) recently attended the Annual General Meeting of the European Professional Women's Network, which was held in Nice, France. Roz, who is Vice President of City Women's Network represented CWN.

The AGM was attended by 18 senior professional women representing 12 different womens networks from cities across Europe including London (both CWN and EPWN London) Paris, Lyon, Nice, Brussels, Madrid, Barcelona, Vienna, Copenhagen, Oslo, and Amsterdam. There were also representatives from Athens and Frankfurt where new networks are being set up.

In addition to the formal AGM, the main topics and priorities were decided for the coming year. They include the third bi-annual study (performed by Mercer) of the representation of women on boards in European Top 50 companies; a programme to attract senior business women and give opportunities to connect them with peers Europe wide; an expansion of the Networks proprietary collaborative networking platform; along with continuing engagement on the EU Commissions Network for Women in Decision making in Politics and Economy. Finally, many of the city networks operate highly-sought after mentoring programmes.

The event was hosted by the Nice - Côte d'Azur branch of European Professional Women's Network at the headquarters of TEAM Côte d'Azur, which promotes inward investment to Nice and the Alpes Maritime region.

Reputation Management During The Recession

During a recession the maintenance of a good corporate reputation is more vital than ever as Roz Morris, Managing Director of TV News London, explains in her article in this month's FINANCE & MANAGEMENT magazine.

Other organisations included in the four-page spread, offering advice on managing stakeholder relationships in a recession, are the HMRC, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, HSBC, the Investor Relations Society, Price Waterhouse Coopers LLP, and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing Supply.

Roz writes......

Never be tempted to hope that a problem will go away without any bother. In the age of You Tube it is just not worth the risk. It has never been easier for bad news to travel faster and farther than ever before.. so Forget about old-fashioned management wisdom which always advices cutting back on PR and marketing during hard times."

She adds: Many crises that savage corporate reputations are tales of the unexpected; small problems escalating to crisis level. Her advice is for organisations to have systems for reporting any problems that could cause bad publicity, plus keeping the crisis management plan up to date and building crisis media management into crisis planning.

Call Yourself A Feminist Roz Morris On Radio 4

BBC Radio 4 has just run a series of 3 discussion programmes called Call Yourself a Feminist, chaired by historian Bettany Hughes. The series looked at feminism over the past 40 years and the second programme, broadcast on Tuesday 17 March featured TV News Londons Managing Director, Roz Morris.

Roz was speaking in her role as Vice President of City Womens Network, which was founded in 1978, and she described the very socially restrictive world facing women in the City of London thirty years ago, when women could not even book a table in a restaurant only men could do so as well as looking forward to the future and the growing body of research demonstrating the business case for women in top management. Other speakers on the programme included writers Lynne Segal and Beatrix Campbell and diversity expert, Linda Bellos.

Im really pleased to have taken part in this programme Roz says. As a media trainer for more than 15 years, I took all my own advice of course - and this worked very well. I always advise people to get the first and last word in a discussion programme, and thats exactly what I did.

Lydia who has worked for TVNL for four years, is in charge of bookings and administration as well as our website content. TV News London Trainer Chairs Oxford Media Day

TV News Londons, media and presentation trainer, Kati Whitaker chaired the recent Media Day at Somerville College, Oxford. Kati, who is an award-winning BBC broadcaster, is pictured (right) with Roz Morris, Managing Director of TV News London, who also attended the conference and helped to organise it.

The speakers, all Somerville alumni, included Fiona McPhillips, Deputy Features Editor of the Daily Telegraph, Lucy Neville Rolfe, Executive Director, Corporate and Legal Affairs, Tesco plc, Dr Paula Clifford, Communications Officer for Christian Aid, Ayesha Mohideen, BBC Head of Knowledge Multiplatform Commissioning, and Adrian Politowski, film producer.

Roz Morris, Managing Director of TV News London Ltd attended this year's prestigious Women of the Year Lunch Awards held at the Guildhall, London on October 13th. Roz, who is on the Nominating Council for the Lunch is pictured (left) above with Maeve Donovan, Managing Director of The Irish Times.

2008: Shy Keenan and Sara Payne

This year we are giving a joint award to two exceptional women who have both in an entirely different way suffered at the hands of paedophiles and have risen above this appalling abuse to fight for a better world for our children. Together they have campaigned for eight years for the introduction of Sarah's Law which allows controlled access to the sex offenders register and finally this year it has been accepted and is being tested in four Police areas so parents could know if there is a sex offender in their area. If it is successful it could be rolled out on a national basis

Sara you will recognise but Shy was brought up on the dark side of hell in a Birkenhead Council Estate where being female was a weapon used to destroy her. She escaped that hell many years ago but many of those feelings still remain.

Window to the World Award

This award salutes a woman whose courage and determination to bring to our attention the plight of other human beings often at risk to herself changes the way we think about the world.

2008: Ann Cotton

This award salutes a woman whose courage and determination has brought to our attention the educational deprivation of young women in Zimbabwe. On visiting Western Zimbabwe in 1991 she discovered that the lack of financial resources was a major barrier to girls over 12 attending school. She was so incensed by the waste of such talent that on her return to Britain she created CAMFED the Campaign for Female Education first raising funds by baking cakes and selling them in a local market. Fourteen years later she had created a three million pound charity with educational programmes across the sub-Saharan Africa which now reaches four hundred and twenty seven youngsters across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana and Tanzania.

The Women of the Year Food for Thought Award celebrates the exceptional contribution made by a woman who not only built the international Impact programme which is a global initiative that prevents major causes of disability but has a obsession with a project called 'Hidden Hunger' which specifically addresses malnutrition which you will not be surprised to hear effect 800 million people globally. Learning from her experiences abroad Impact is now piloting a scheme in the UK to tackle healthy eating specifically looking at the absence of Iodine, Vitamin A and Iron from the diet and has created a Neighbourhood Health Watch scheme which runs cookery clubs and gardening schemes to provide and use fresh fruit and vegetables.

Roz gives examples of media Dos and Donts as well as case histories where companies have handled the media well and others where mishandling the media has led to serious reputational damage and damage to income costing millions.

Financial Management is the official monthly magazine of CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and has a worldwide circulation of 150,000, making it one of the largest-circulation business magazines in the UK.

Roz spoke at the CIMA Executive CPD Academy in London on September 15-16.
